Alsace Wine Route.

The Alsace Wine Route is a must see among the most famous wine routes in France. With its medieval castles and charming flowery villages, it offers a unique experience to its visitors.

Officially a tourist route since 1953, it attracts visitors from all over the world. Running from the north of Alsace with Marlenheim to the south with Thann, it measures 170km in total.

One wonders how it is possible to allow visitors to drink and drive with the support of the official authorities! Shocking as it seems the lovely inns are there to help you sober up before you go on to the next town to taste the wine of yet another producer. You can always chose to ride a bike while enjoying breathtaking views of mother nature.

Today Alsacian wines are oftentimes found even at your local supermarket. Look for the Gewurtraminer, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Blanc and Noir, Muscat and Sylvaner. Alsace counts 51 Grands Crus, wines that have been discerned with the AOC label, the ultimate proof of quality in France. The Grands Crus represent a yearly production of 45,000 hl, 4% only of all of Alsace wines.

Alsace is a wine region since the time of Julius Cesar and produce essentially white wines. You can find red wines and rosé but their production is reduced. Most of the wines are only from one vineyard but you can find some that are a mixture. The Cremant d’Alsace is to Alsace what Champagne is to the world; a magnificent bubbly white wine. It is actually well known in France and over the last few years has started to cross our borders. While cheaper than Champagne, it is nonetheless sublime!
