Assateague Island,

This island in the Maryland is somehow the equivalent of the french Camargue. This is a unique place recreated daily by the wind and waves of the ocean. On Assateague Island, 60 km long, life has adapted to the movement. Ideal for relaxing, taking time to relax, you can walk on the sand beaches, explore the salt marshes, coastal bays and maritime forests.

Assateague Island National Seashore was created in 1962 to protect Assateague Island. National Park of the services involved in the protection of wild and marine life.

Summers are generally hot and humid. It is therefore recommended to guard against insects (mosquitoes, ticks, biting flies, …) by suitable clothing or insect repellent. In winter, the climate is cold, wet and windy. It is advisable to put good shoes to walk on the sand and wear hard-soled shoes or sandals for walking or wading in the water.

Do not pass without Assateague Island to admire its famous wild horses. Those are actually descendants of domestic horses that have returned to the wild. Beautiful, they are equipped with a robust constitution that allows them to survive the harsh climatic conditions: heat, mosquitoes, storms and a rudimentary food.

However, it is not advisable to feed them because they can get sick with human food. Moreover, they then learn to beg by the roadside and get killed by cars. Finally, treat them as tame animals deprives their wildness and they can also be dangerous if they are approached too closely. By leaving the horses the space they need to live freely, you protect their species and your family.

The preservation of the marine natural environment is vital for migratory birds who stop to rest and feed before continuing their way. There are over 320 species of birds on Assateague Island which is a unique coastal ecosystem and a sustainable resource that all visitors can enjoy.

Many tours are proposed to encourage visitors of all ages to become interested and learn about the environment characteristic of this barrier island that is Assateague Island.
